AdSense income dropped?

Unless you are checking your stats regularly then you probably won’t even notice that your income has dropped for a particular site.

Sometimes you will see that it has actually gone down to zero.

The first thing to do is to check your web statistics. You may have installed Google Analytics or another tracking program. If you haven’t then you may automatically have something like AWstats installed.

If your stats are more or less the same, then you need to investigate further why this may be.

Some reasons it may be are:

1. There is an error on one of your pages which is not causing the page to display correctly.

2. Your site has actually been hacked. Ouch.

3. AdSense is no longer displaying on your site. Find out why. Perhaps the site has been banned or perhaps there aren’t ads which are targeted towards the content.

4. You have been hit by Smart Pricing. Not a huge amount that you can do, but are some steps that you can take.

The point really, is to make sure that you do keep an eye on all of your statistics and notice if anything changes. And then adjust as necessary.

Why do I mention this?

I recently noticed that the income on one of my sites that was earning about $15 a day fell to about $5 a day. Consistently.

There were no errors.

And hadn’t been hacked.

What I did notice though, was that AdSense was not being shown on the home page but was on the other pages.

The home page was a list of links to other pages in the site.

What I did, was to add a block of text which was targeted towards a particular topic and within 24 hours, the AdSense is showing again and the income is back up again.

About 10 minutes work for $10 a day ain’t so bad 🙂

Moral: Keeping an eye on your stats and if something changes for the better or for the worse, find out why. It’s not always due to the amount of traffic that is coming.

The Future of Internet Marketing in 2012

Internet marketing is changing and we all really need to keep up with it.

There is a great part in Forrest Gump, where he is in charge of a fishing trawler and there is a massive storm. Due to his perserverence, he is able to keep his trawler afloat whilst all of the other trawlers sink.

His business prospers greatly as he is the only fish supplier in town. He then invests in Apple shares when the price is low and makes an absolute fortune.

If you are selling anything in the make money niche or to small businesses then in a very short while, you are either going to have to stop selling (ie. sink) or change with the times.

I don’t claim to have any insider knowledge, but I have seen this coming for a long time and it seems that changes are taking place very quickly and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the whole industry being turned upside down in the immediate future.

So, what’s the problem and how has this come about?

Since almost the start of commerce, the vast majority of industries have been regulated in some way. A simple example of that is that scales and weights were tested by inspectors at the market to make sure that customers were receiving the right amount of produce.

With the introduction of the internet, things became much harder.

Firstly, there was doubt on which country was the governing country.

What happens to someone who lives in country A but has a business registered in country B who hosts their site in country C and sells to people in country D.

Not only that, but there becomes a fine line on what is legal and what is not in certain countries.

Just in the last few years, industries such as pharmacutical drugs and gambling have been totally changed and banned in certain countries.

Previously, for example it was easy for someone in US to order pharmaceutical drugs from another country without a prescription whereas they would have needed one in USA in order to obtain the drugs.

One industry which became bigger than ever before on the internet was the make money online and business opportunities market.

The internet is actually the perfect medium for this as it is easy to reach a huge number of people and easy to both take payment and deliver the goods within seconds.

However, as is extremely predictable, there are many products in the industry which are scams and no-one has any hope of being successful with them.

There are also many products which would be illegal offline, but people were taking advantage of online anonymity in order to practice them.

For example:

1. Ponzi
2. Pyramid scheme

A year or so ago, the FTC which is kind of the US governing body for businesses started putting certain guideline into place about what you could and couldn’t say when you were selling something.

For example:

1. Only use genuine testimonials
2. Say what the typical results are

However, due to the huge mass of sites, it is almost impossible to govern them. And although they have gone after certain major players, there is still a huge amount still out there.

In the past year alone, we have seen certain companies clamp down on who can do business with them.

Plimus has basically banned anything to do with online marketing or making money.

Clickbank has become far stricter about what products they will sell.

Even Paypal has started shutting down accounts for questionable products. Try doing a ‘successful’ WSO with them and you will see what I mean…

However, over the last week rumors have started to surface about what the next step is.

And I am almost certain that these rumors are true.

The first is that Clickbank are certainly going to stop processing make money online products.

The second is that the FTC are start going to target the major branches of the industry to make sure that they clean up their act or be penalised.

Who are the major branches?

a. Hosting companies
b. Credit card processors
c. Advertising networks eg. Adwords, Facebook etc.

What this means in practice, is that one day soon your hosting company will probably turn around to you and tell you that you can no longer host with them unless you take down certain sites or change them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually say bye bye to you even without a warning.

Clickbank will also say bye bye if they feel that your product does not fit in with their new guidelines which will probably be pretty wide. ie. Mention money on your salespage and you are out.

Paypal and other credit card processors will also close down your account if it fits within a certain risk level.

So, what kind of products fit within these kind of guidelines?

a. Business in a box
b. How to make money online

Now, some of these products may be totally genuine and help the end user.

I am pretty sure though that that won’t matter and the fact that they fit in within that guideline will stop them from being able to be sold.

Remember, the FTC are NOT going after the individual retailers so won’t judge you individually. They are going to go after the larger service providers who are then going to have to decide whether to go through each of your products or just flag you as a whole.

So, if you are selling internet marketing products, what is the solution?

1. Stop selling Make Money Online products. Get rid of any ‘illegal’ keywords from the name of your product. eg. cash, money, profit, auto, method, instant etc. I am assuming that as soon as you process a payment using one of these words it will raise a red flag.

2. Change your salesletters and marketing materials so instead of focussing on making money, it focuses on the tools which get you there. So, for example instead of saying, do this and you will make money, change that to: do this linkbuilding technique and you will increase your search engine rankings.

3. Focus more on other niches outside of make money and also increase your focus on other ways to make money such as AdSense etc.

This solution I am giving actually goes against all normal copywriting rules where you are supposed to highlight the end result rather than the steps to get there.

But I am pretty sure that the choice will no longer be there for you.

The way I am thinking about it, is that I now need to start thinking of myself as a service provider. It is a major shift in thinking, but also the only way that I can carry on selling my products online.

And is it also going to affect people outside of the US? Definitely yes. Probably not from an individual legal standpoint as it is doubtful that you will be prosecuted. However, you won’t be able to actually use any payment processor or major hosting company so ultimately it will be hard if not impossible to do business.

Unless you enjoy waiting to receive checks through the mail of course… 😉

So, just to finish off I want to examine if it is a ‘good’ thing or not.

Where it is not a good thing, is that it will be a blanket ruling on all products whether you have the best product in the world or the biggest scams in the world.

It will definitely affect my own business negatively in the short term as well as many other thousands out there. I am going to have to pull some of my bestselling products simply because they show people how to make money online.

On the positive side, I am pretty sure that it will increase consumer confidence and that customers will not get burnt as much which means that in the long term, businesses that offer quality products that are not straight ‘make money’ based will prosper.

What do you think is the future?

A Streetcar named D…

Whether you are selling your own products,

being an affiliate for someone else or
putting advertising on your websites, there
is one thing that will make you more
successful…

…and that is the secret of the ‘D’ word.

The D word of course is desire.

Whenever you are doing any marketing
online (or offline in fact), you must
make your potential customer have
desire for it.

This is the reason why ‘sex sells’ is
true.

And why products and brands spend so much
money on recruiting celebrities.

They create Desire.

Whenever you are selling something, you
have to make it exciting and ‘sexy’.

Whether this is soft drinks, ebooks or
even software for aircraft hangars, if
you want to sell more, then you must
create that desire.

If you are preselling as an affiliate
then try and build that desire up before
your prospect even lands on the salespage
or website that you are sending them to.

It will make it a FAR easier sale.

If you are using AdSense or other types
of advertising on your website, then
build up the desire of your visitor
making them want to click on an ad.

This can be hard as you don’t always
know what ads will appear on your site,
but make sure that YOUR content is
exciting and fresh and you will have
a far greater chance.

Obviously if you have a product based
site, then this will be far easier.

DESIRE can be a dangerous thing and
has been the falling point of many
kings and emperors throughout the
centuries.

However, if you use it in your marketing,
then you will make far more money.

Think about it!

Traffic Kaboom – A basic explanation

I just wanted to give a quick explanation of what Traffic Kaboom is, how it works and why I believe that it is so successful.

1. Traffic Kaboom allows you to submit spun articles via their interface. These are then distributed to up to 120 blogs. Each of these (120) blog posts contains a link to your website.

2. You also have the opportunity to submit one of your own blogs to the system. This will then have content posted to it by other people in the network giving you free content. This is NOT mandatory though but an extra revenue stream.

3. Due to the fact that different people are letting content be submitted to their blog, it means that there are lots of different hosts and IPs being used that are then being linked to your site. In Google’s eyes, this increases the value of each link.

4. When you submit your article, you are able to spin it. In fact, they have integrated 3 different kinds of Spinners. This means that although Google may not see all of the 120 links coming from unique content, they can see a diversity of articles. You can also spin the title.

5. In addition to Traffic Kaboom building incoming links to your website with your chosen link text, they also build on average 15 links to each of your incoming links. What this means is that there is a much higher chance that Google will count those links and is more likely to give more value to those links.

In summary, Traffic Kaboom works extremely well to build relevant incoming links to your sites.

I have used it on multiple sites and achieved in some cases remarkable results.

Scandal at a Conference

I was at a conference recently and the content was top quality.

There was something strange that happened though…

It was not a pitch fest and it may have even been promised that there wouldn’t be any pitches (I can’t remember).

On the final day of the conference, one of the presenters gave a presentation which he said that he would be releasing a product about next year. I wasn’t a fan of his presentation style even though the content itself was pretty good. He happened to be the last presenter and there were quite a few people in the audience who had to leave before the end of his talk.

Before he finished, someone put up their hand and asked him if he could make his pitch for his product as they wanted to buy but had to get to the airport to catch a flight.

He replied that he didn’t have anything to sell because his product hadn’t been created yet.

Fair enough.

Here is where things started to get a bit weirder though…

After this guy’s presentation, the organiser of the conference went up on stage and gave some conclusions for the conference. In order to put it into context, the organiser of the conference is a well respected marketer online and in all probability, the attendees were there because they have respect for the organiser.

I, as well as most other people in the room were expecting the organiser to either sell one of his products or coaching. And not only wouldn’t have minded him trying to sell, but would have actually been very welcome to it.

But he didn’t.

So, what is my point?

Not whether he should or he shouldn’t have done. Or whether people in the room would have bought – having spoken to a number of them afterward, I am pretty sure that they would have bought whatever he would have pitched even if it was 4 figures.

My point really is, what created the atmosphere in the room or the relationship with the speaker that people desperately wanted to buy?

Here is what I came up with:

1. The people at the conference were there BECAUSE of the organiser. They already had a preexisting relationship with him and were there because of the strength of that relationship.

2. The conference had over-delivered on its promise. Therefore, there was a lot of reciprocity and people wanted to give back to the organizer that had done so.

3. Many people had made a great effort to be at the conference. Therefore, they wanted to take home a virtual souvenir. On a personal level, I feel like that whenever I am on vacation and end up buying overpriced souvenir from gift shops even if I know it will end up at the back of the cupboard.

4. At the end of a conference, there is a lot of positive energy flowing and people are very motivated to carry out the good intentions which were created during that conference. By buying the ‘product’ at the end, it makes them feel that there is a greater chance that they will do so.

So, how can you create that rabid buyer who is waiting to bite off your arm to buy from you?

1. When you try and sell something, try and make it an event. I think that is really what is the core of the Product Launch Formula and why it still works well.

2. Make your pitch have a beginning, middle and an end. The end is when you are trying to make the actual sale. The beginning and middle are what leads up to that.

3. Reciprocity. Very powerful. Read Cialdini. Need I say more?

4. Webinars. Seriously. Use them. They are extremely powerful and work well in virtually any niche. When I have done them outside of internet marketing they have often converted at over 50%.

So, here’s my question for you to comment on below:

1. Would the organizer have had more, or less integrity by pitching even had he promised not to?

2. How do you create rabid buyers?
